Rams QB Matthew Stafford 'right on track' to start Week 1 vs. Bills amid elbow issue

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford came off February's Super Bowl LVI victory over the Cincinnati Bengals requiring an offseason anti-inflammatory shot for his elbow, and eyebrows were raised earlier this month when Rams head coach Sean McVay revealed that Stafford was still experiencing discomfort early into training camp.

As Michael Baca noted for the NFL's website, it's since been said that Stafford is dealing with elbow tendinitis that previously decreased his workload during summer sessions. However, the 34-year-old was a full participant for a Tuesday intrasquad scrimmage, and he indicated during a Wednesday press conference that he's feeling more like himself.

"It felt like I got a bunch of good work in," Stafford explained, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "But I feel good and right on track to be doing what I want to be doing."

Stafford would not, however, guarantee that he will be 100% when the Rams begin their title defense with a Week 1 home game against the Buffalo Bills on the night of Sept. 8.

"I’m not going to put a timetable on it," he said of his recovery. "I’m just going out there, doing my work, trusting the process that we have. I know that I’m able to go out there and function at a high level right now. So, whatever it feels like, hopefully, it continues to keep getting better as it has. But I know that functionally, I feel like I can do everything I need to do. So, just trying to continue on that road."

According to Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire, McVay confirmed that primary backup signal-caller John Wolford will play the first half of Friday's preseason game versus the Houston Texans after Wolford was a spectator for this past Saturday's matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. Bryce Perkins will replace Wolford for the second half of the Houston contest.
