REPORT: Dolphins May Be Receptive to Trading Minkah Fitzpatrick
Senior NFL reporter Albert Breer for Sports Illustrated is reporting that the Miami Dolphins are more receptive to trading Minkah Fitzpatrick than they are Jaylen Waddle.
Breer says, “The Dolphins are the first seller to be past their Week 9 game, and their edge rushers have elicited plenty of interest—Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips and Matthew Judon could be moved. Phillips, still only 26 and in a contract year, might be the one with the most value, despite losing chunks of the past three years to serious injuries. The Eagles are a team to watch, with the question being how far Philly would go to get him (sounds like it’d cost at least a third-rounder). Teams asking about Jaylen Waddle have been flatly told no. But Miami may be more receptive on Minkah Fitzpatrick. There are also fair questions floating around on whether there are guardrails on the current regime, based on the tenor of conversations.”
What makes trading Fitzpatrick so interesting is that we know how it ended his first time as a member of the Miami Dolphins a few years back.
He wanted out of Miami last time because he didn’t like the losing, and he didn’t get along with Brian Flores.
Now, with the Dolphins embarking on another rebuilding process, the losing has only just begun.
The team is currently 2-7, and as they pivot towards a full youth movement and move on from more veteran players, will Fitzpatrick want to stay?
He is only tied to Miami through the 2026 season, and none of his 2026 contract of $15.6 million is guaranteed, so Miami can release him and open up a lot of cap space there.
So, could Miami trade him and get something in return rather than releasing him in March?
It is believed that Minkah was open to a return to Miami this year because his younger brother is a senior in high school playing in South Florida this year, so he wanted to be closer to him.
Well, the high school football season is winding down, and his brother is going to Georgia next season.
Minkah has nothing tying him to South Florida now.
He may want out again and look to get on a good team instead of going through a full rebuild process on a Dolphins team that is years away from being a contender.
