Report: Dolphins to sign three-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Melvin Ingram

Veteran pass rusher Melvin Ingram is signing with the Miami Dolphins, according to a report from Jordan Schultz of The Game Day.

Ingram, 33, was a first-round pick for the San Diego Chargers in 2012 and earned three trips to the Pro Bowl with the franchise before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free agent in 2021. He was traded by the Steelers to the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2021 season and finished the regular season with one sack for each team. In the postseason, Ingram recorded two more sacks with the Chiefs.

Earlier in May, the Chiefs reportedly placed the rarely used unrestricted free agent tender on Ingram. That designation meant Ingram was offered a one-year, $4.4M fully guaranteed deal (110% of his 2021 salary) to stay with the Chiefs, but could still hunt for another deal on the free agent market. If Ingram didn't sign with a team before July 22, he would have been forced to stay with the Chiefs on the one-year deal.

Instead, Ingram will join a Dolphins defense that had the fifth most sacks in the NFL in 2021 with 48. Emmanuel Ogbah led the way for Miami last season with nine sacks and rookie linebacker Jaelan Phillips was just behind him with 8.5.

While Ingram has 51 career sacks and 74 tackles for loss, he missed more than half of the 2020 season with knee injuries before struggling to be productive in 2021.
