If the term “journeyman quarterback” ever made it into a dictionary, adding a photograph of Ryan Fitzpatrick alongside the entry would be a no-brainer.

When the 36-year-old signal-caller takes his first snap on Sunday in the Miami Dolphins’ season-opening showdown with the Baltimore Ravens, Fitzpatrick’s name will be added to the NFL record books.

Now entering his 15th season, he will become the first quarterback in league history to make a start for eight different teams. Of course, Fitzpatrick is humbled by the record.

“You know it is (rewarding),” Fitzpatrick said this week, per the Dolphins’ official site. “It’s something that’s never been done before. Just in terms of who I am and the career I’ve had and the different places I’ve been, this means a lot to me. I think being able to do it here with a younger group where it’s going to rely so much on communication and I’ve got to make sure I’m at my best on every single play, whether it’s during the play or before at the line of scrimmage. I’m going to put a lot on myself this week to make sure everything goes smoothly. I think, in terms of me being in this spot and this place right now, I think my career has led me to this and I fit well in the role I’m being asked to play right now.”

Fitzpatrick made Miami his latest stop in his NFL odyssey when he signed a two-year deal in March. He was expected to be relegated to backup duties once the team acquired Josh Rosen from the Cardinals in April, but veteran beat out the second-year quarterback to land atop the depth chart.

In total, Fitzpatrick had made starts for the Rams, Bengals, Bills, Titans, Texans, Jets and Buccaneers ahead of Sunday’s game.

Whether or not there’s any “Fitzmagic” left in the grizzled, bearded 36-year-old quarterback remains to be seen. With the Dolphins expected to go absolutely nowhere this season, it will be interesting to see how long the team sticks with Fitzpatrick before turning over the offense to the still-developing Rosen.
