The Pittsburgh Steelers have been in Aaron Rodgers or bust mode for weeks if not months now.
And while there have been few if any other teams that offer real competition to the Steelers for the services of Rodgers as of late, that may have suddenly changed following the unexpected retirement of New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr.
Even still, some of the best on the Saints beat are sold on the idea of Rodgers in New Orleans…
The Rodgers to New Orleans discourse is intriguing. It would make sense from the standpoint that the current QB room for the Saints has nearly zero starting experience.
Tyler Shough is a rookie. Jake Haener is a career backup in the pros. Spencer Rattler got some reps last season, but the output was very inconsistent. On the flip-side, the Saints have talent around whoever plays quarterback for them next year. Alvin Kamara is still a great running back option. Chris Olave and Rashhid Shaheed can stretch the field effectively, and Juwan Johnson is back in the fold at TE. Not to mention, the offensive line should be much improved, as long as they stay healthy.
New Orleans just took Kelvin Banks Jr. with their first-round pick in this year’s draft, and Taliese Fuaga proved he’s a cornerstone OT piece as a rookie last season.
You could argue that the surrounding cast would give the Saints a small edge over the Steelers, but choosing to bring in Rodgers would be another sidestep on a chance to hit the reset button for GM Mickey Loomis.

There is certainly an argument to be made that the Saints’ offensive skill positions are better than the Steelers after the trade of George Pickens.
The trio of Chris Olave, Rashhid Shaheed and Brandin Cooks, are better than DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III and Robert Woods. The offensive lines probably come out in the wash.
Where Pittsburgh clearly has an advantage over the Saints is their culture, standard of playoff appearances, and continuity among the coaching staff and front office.
All of that, for a player who has one, max two years left of play in the NFL should weigh very heavily into the equation.
