Seahawks WR DK Metcalf: Defenses 'started to figure us out' as season went along

The Seahawks began the season looking unstoppable on offense but by the end of the year, the team had come crashing back down to earth. Wide receiver DK Metcalf acknowledged that opposing defenses were able to adjust and slow down Seattle as the season went along, ultimately getting the Seahawks bounced from the playoffs on Wild Card Weekend.

"Teams just started to figure us out," Metcalf said on Brandon Marshall's I Am Athlete podcast. "We've been running deep pass, ever since (coach) Pete (Carroll) got there. Play-action. Run the ball, run the ball, run the ball, go deep. Teams just said, 'We're just not gonna let you all go deep.'"

The numbers support Metcalf's assessment, as the Seahawks scored at least 30 points in all but one game in the first half of the season, while only scoring more than 30 in one game in the back half of the season. And even though Seattle managed to make the playoffs, the lack of variety on offense caused them to get handily beaten by the Los Angeles Rams, scoring only 13 points on offense.

After Seahawks' playoff exit, Carroll said that the key to fixing the offense was establishing the run, but Metcalf's comments seem to indicate that he is in favor of not only relying on deep balls in the passing game. With the team currently searching for a new offensive coordinator after the dismissal of Brian Schottenheimer, it will be interesting to see what sort of changes a new OC brings to the stagnant offense.
