Social media roasts Jimmy Garoppolo for Dan Orlovsky-like end zone blunder

If there’s anyone who knows how San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo feels, it’s Dan Orlovsky.

The former Detroit Lions QB, who’s now an NFL analyst for ESPN, has been mocked repeatedly for the last 14 years for his lapse in judgment on a third-and-10 play from his own one-yard line against the Minnesota Vikings on October 12, 2008, when he dropped back, rolled out to his right, and ran out of the back of the end zone for a safety.

Detroit ultimately lost 12-10 and finished the season 0-16.

On Sunday, in San Francisco’s 11-10 loss to the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High, Garoppolo suffered a similar fate as he dropped back and stepped out of the back of the end zone while trying to evade pressure and fire off a pass to move the chains. 

Both Orlovsky and Garoppolo ended up losing their respective games by two points or less.

However, Garoppolo’s misfortune was potentially a blessing in disguise as he was actually intercepted on the play by Broncos linebacker Bradley Chubb, who ran it in for a pick-six, which was negated due to the safety.

“I’VE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER,” Orlovsky tweeted. “FFFFREEEEEDDDOOOMMMM.”

Much like Orlovsky, who’s since learned to find the humor in his blooper, even writing “end zones should be 11 yards” in his Twitter bio, social media won’t soon let Garoppolo live down his mistake anytime soon.
