Teddy Bridgewater to sign one-year deal to be Dolphins backup QB

Once the Denver Broncos came to terms on the blockbuster trade that netted them one-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Russell Wilson, Teddy Bridgewater largely became surplus. As such, Bridgewater will head elsewhere in 2022.

Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Adam Schefter of ESPN, Bridgewater will be putting pen to paper on a one-year contract to join the Miami Dolphins, where he will serve as a backup for 2020 first-round draft selection Tua Tagovailoa. 

Some may assume the 29-year-old who began this past campaign as Denver's QB1 will have a chance to win the gig from Tagovailoa. However, new Miami head coach Mike McDaniel has repeatedly insisted Tagovailoa is his starter and said at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this month he believes the 24-year-old "has some skills that I think are untapped." Meanwhile, Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith told reporters last month he is "super excited" to work with Tagovailoa. 

Bridgewater last faced a live defense on Dec. 19 when he was knocked out cold during what became a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, but said in January he "definitely" wanted to continue playing even though he now has a history of concussions and head-related injuries. 

According to ESPN stats, he finished the 2021 regular season 12th among eligible quarterbacks with a 94.9 passer rating, 20th with a 47.4 total QBR, 23rd with 3,052 passing yards, and 21st with 18 touchdown passes. He completed 66.9% of his attempts and was intercepted on seven occasions.
