Texans Announce Coaching Staff For 2023 Led By DeMeco Ryans

DeMeco Ryans has completed his first-ever staff as head coach of the Houston Texans.

The Texans officially announced their new coaching staff for 2023 Friday afternoon. 

They retained nine coaches from the previous regime following the hiring of running backs coach Danny Barrett on Thursday. Houston also kept Frank Ross, who put together one of the league's best special team units last season.

Each hiring showcased the vision Ryans had of putting together a versatile staff with the intent of helping the Texans enhance their performance next season.

"We want a very diverse coaching staff, and that's not only diversity in race, but diversity in experience," Ryans said. "We want experienced coaches, some coaches not so much experience. We want coaches who are great teachers. 

"You want a diverse staff because players learn differently, so we want to be able to present things in a different way to different players to make sure when they step on the field Sunday, they're clear minds. They're not thinking. They're playing as fast as possible."

Houston's most significant hire came by adding Bobby Slowik as the team's new offensive coordinator. A source had previously told TexansDaily.com that Ryans was hoping to bring Slowik to Houston in this capacity, the two having worked together with the San Francisco 49ers.

The source also described Slowik as a "bright young coach who would be good for the Texans'' and credited Slowik partly for the success the Niners experienced under rookie quarterback Brock Purdy.

Slowik held the position of the 49ers' passing-game coordinator during the 2022 campaign.

Ryans became the third coach general manager Nick Caserio has hired in three years. He has had a pair of one-and-done coaches, which began with David Culley in 2021, followed by Lovie Smith.

The Texans have won seven games under Caserio's two-year management. But despite back-to-back losing seasons, Caserio remains optimistic in his commitment to building a winning program.

"We are working to build a sustainable program that has long-term success and DeMeco is the coach we feel is the best fit to help us achieve our goals," Caserio said.
