Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has played one less game than 14 of the other 19 players who rank among the top-20 in receiving yards so far in 2025. And yet despite that simple fact of more games equating to more opportunities, no one in the league is remotely close to Smith-Njigba's receiving pace thus far. He leads the NFL in receiving yardage by 99 yards over Cincinnati's Ja'Marr Chase and is averaging 15 more yards per game than the next closest player, Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua.
It's been a tremendous season — one in which Smith-Njigba has asserted himself as not only one of the best breakout stories in football but also into the conversation around the best overall receivers in football. His resume just got a little extra juice, this week too, despite not having played a game this past weekend. He's been named the NFC's Offensive Player of the Month for October.
Smith-Njigba finished the month of October with three consecutive games with eight receptions, at least 123 receiving yards, and a touchdown in each. Talk about a good month at the office. Seattle is suddenly looking like a team that can dream big for the 2025 season and the connection between the breakout receiver and new quarterback Sam Darnold should be considered a massive part of the reason why.
There's plenty of credit to go around. Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has done a great job of mixing heavy personnel packages to get lots of space for their star receiver to create separation off of play action. Whether it is man or zone, press or off — no one has found an answer to JSN.
His honor is pretty rarefied are for a Seahawks offensive player, too.
He's the first skill player (read: non-quarterback) to win the award since running back Chris Carson in December of 2018, when he rushed for 516 yards and five touchdowns in five games. Only Geno Smith and Russell Wilson have won it since — making the legend and resume of Smith-Njigba's season grow to even greater heights. Not a bad notch in your belt for a bye week.
