This will be brought up multiple times today, but the report out of Indianapolis is that the Lions are going to be aggressive when it comes to finding cornerbacks in free agency. They've already been linked to some of the bigger names and they could certainly go that route, but here's a route they could go in addition.
This team needs all the help they can get at corner after this spot was probably their weakest in 2023. One thing the team lacks is veteran voice in the room and Stephon Gilmore could be that presence in more ways than one.
The former All-Pro is probably nearing the end of his career, but he's still been very good as of late. He started 17 games for the Cowboys last year and played well doing it. Pro Football Focus had him graded out at a nice 74.4. That's pretty good for a guy that's about to turn 34-years-old.
The most intriguing piece of this whole thing is that his younger brother Steven Gilmore currently plays for the Lions and the team seems to be pretty high on him. While he didn't play a lot in 2023, the Lions kept him stashed on their 53-man roster all year long and never moved on from him despite needing to make room on multiple occasions. That's a good sign for how they feel about his growth.
The older brother could come in and help get the younger brother ready for prime time while also playing on team that's expected to be a Super Bowl contender. Everyone gets what they want in this situation.
What would contract for Gilmore cost the Lions? Our on staff cap experts project that Gilmore could get a one year deal worth $8.5 million. That's not bad at all. It's cost effective and short term. Plus you get more out of it than just good play. There's a mentor aspect to this that's hard to find.
