Tom Brady’s tribute to Danny Amendola has gone viral for a Texas Tech joke that NFL fans quickly connected to Patrick Mahomes.
The seven-time Super Bowl champion made the remark during a Georgetown McDonough School of Business commencement speech, where he used Amendola as an example of the kind of teammate who can save people in high-pressure moments.
Brady’s larger message was about surrounding yourself with reliable people, but the “glorified community college” line gave social media a very different reason to run with it.
NotWhoYouDream shared the clip of Tom Brady’s Georgetown speech, where he praised former New England Patriots teammate Danny Amendola.
Brady said, “Danny went undrafted out of Texas Tech. He was cut by three NFL teams. He wasn’t the tallest, he wasn’t the fastest, but he had a huge heart, and he played his a__ off in the biggest moments.”
He added, “And I hope you guys find colleagues like Danny. Having business school friends are great, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes you need a kid from a glorified community college who can bail your a__ out of any jam.
“If you want to achieve great things, surround yourself with people like him.”
The story came from Super Bowl LI, when Amendola helped the Patriots during their famous 28-3 comeback against the Atlanta Falcons.
Brady’s point was complimentary toward Amendola, because he was telling graduates that pedigree matters less than toughness, reliability and the ability to deliver when everything is on the line.
The reason the joke spread so quickly is that Texas Tech is not only Amendola’s alma mater, but also the school most closely tied to Mahomes.
Mahomes starred for the Red Raiders before becoming the Kansas City Chiefs’ franchise quarterback, and he remains one of the most famous athletes in school history.
That made Brady’s “glorified community college” line sound like more than a harmless Amendola joke to many fans, especially because Mahomes is the one active quarterback most often framed as a threat to Brady’s GOAT legacy.
The Brady-Mahomes connection adds another layer. Brady beat Mahomes in the AFC Championship Game during the 2018 season and again in Super Bowl LV, but Mahomes has continued building a resume that keeps the comparison alive.
There is no clear sign Brady meant the line as a direct shot at Mahomes, and the speech was really about Amendola’s value as a clutch teammate.
