Tyrod Taylor 'looking forward to working alongside' Daniel Jones on Giants

The New York Giants allegedly wanted to bring former Buffalo Bills backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to town to push and, ultimately, compete with 2019 first-round draft pick Daniel Jones but lost him to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he will presumably begin the spring as a QB1.

New Giants general manager Joe Schoen didn't waste time after that supposed setback and came to terms on a two-year deal with journeyman Tyrod Taylor. Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, Taylor told reporters Thursday he and Jones have exchanged texts as the 32-year-old prepares to mentor yet another younger signal-caller.

"I’m looking forward to working alongside him and looking forward to us pushing each other," Taylor said of Jones.

Since 2018, Taylor has spent time in the same quarterback rooms as Cleveland Browns starter Baker Mayfield, Los Angeles Chargers star Justin Herbert and 2021 third-round pick Davis Mills, who may or may not be atop the Houston Texans' depth chart at the position after they trade Deshaun Watson. Like Schoen and new head coach Brian Daboll before him, Taylor offered praise for Jones on Thursday.

"Very talented. We’ve seen him make all the throws. Can escape the pocket. Does a good job of leading as well," Taylor remarked. "I’ve been impressed."

As winter turns to spring, there remain more questions than answers about the neck injury that prematurely ended Jones' 2021 season in late November. If the Giants had to play a game next month, Taylor and not Jones would be under center for that contest.

Taylor will also work with 2017 third-round pick Davis Webb, who kept his spot on the roster after the Giants allowed Jake Fromm to hit free agency.
