As the season winds down, we’re hearing more announcements from the NHL for team-nominated awards. On Wednesday, the Calgary Flames announced that forward Andrew Mangiapane is their nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

The King Clancy is awarded each season to the player who who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and who has made a significant humanitarian contribution to his community. The award is adjudicated by a panel from both the Professional Hockey Writers Assocation and the NHL Broadcasters’ Association.

Originally drafted by the Flames in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft – in his third season of draft eligibility – Mangiapane has become a fixture in the Flames lineup since breaking into the team from the AHL midway through the 2018-19 season. He’s scored 109 goals and 214 points in 416 career games with the Flames. In addition to his contributions on the ice, he’s also been quite prominent in club events in the community.

Per the club’s release:

“During his seven seasons with the Calgary Flames, Mangiapane has been an excellent contributor to both the team and the Calgary community. While Mangiapane has always been quick to attend community events hosted by the team, this season he decided he wanted to do more. Alongside his fiancé Claudia, Andrew started Mange’s Breadsticks, a youth community hockey program based out of the Youth Centres of Calgary, in the community of Ogden. With the invaluable backing of Mangiapane’s partners, the Flames Foundation and the Calgary Italian Open, they donated the funding required to operate Mange’s Breadsticks at the youth centre this season.”

Flames players have been recipients of the King Clancy four times in its history: Lanny McDonald (1987-88), Joe Nieuwendyk (1994-95), Jarome Iginla (2003-04) and Mikael Backlund (2022-23).

The three finalists for the award will be announced at a later date, with the winner announced likely in June at the NHL’s annual awards.
