Barry Trotz unlikely to coach during 2022-23 NHL season

Barry Trotz doesn't sound too eager to return to coaching ahead of Christmas. 

"I don't know yet," Trotz said about his future during the latest edition of "The Chirp with Daren Millard" podcast, according to the NHL's website. "I'm deciding. There's a couple teams that reached out and I said I'm not there yet. I'm probably going to take the rest of the year off and see where I am. It's still a part of me but I'm going to continue to stay true to myself and my family right now." 

Trotz famously guided the Washington Capitals to the Stanley Cup title in the spring of 2018 and turned just 60 years old in July. Back in May, the New York Islanders fired him as head coach, and it was subsequently learned he rejected an offer from the Winnipeg Jets. 

"I've got some things personally that I've got to take care of, family-wise that I've got to take care of," Trotz explained about turning Winnipeg down. "I didn't feel…if I'd said I'll take the job, I think I would have done any team a little bit of a disservice and myself a disservice because to be a coach in the NHL, it is demanding and it requires your all. It just does, emotionally it just does, mentally it just does. So I couldn't go down that path."

Per the NHL's website, Trotz is second in league history with 1,812 games coached. He's behind only Scotty Bowman (2,141) in that category and is third with 914 career wins.
