The Chicago Blackhawks are finally getting some reinforcements on the blue line. Ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Hawks activated defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk off long-term injured reserve.

Kalynuk suffered a right ankle sprain before the regular season started. On October 6, the Blackhawks announced he would miss 2-4 weeks.

In 21 games for the Hawks last season, Kalynuk recorded nine points (four goals, five assists) and a -6 rating while averaging 16:16 of ice time.

He and fellow defenseman Caleb Jones (left wrist strain) landed on long-term injured reserve within days of each other. That forced the team to seek blue line help externally, which led to the Blackhawks bringing back Erik Gustafsson.

Kalynuk is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Penguins, but his return to the active roster opens the door for his season debut in the near future. The Blackhawks will have multiple practice days before hosting the Arizona Coyotes Friday night.
