The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenseman Jarred Tinordi to a one-year contract extension, the Chicago Sun-Times‘ Ben Pope reported Tuesday.

Tinordi, 31, has two goals and eight points while averaging 16:27 in 44 games with the Blackhawks this year. His new contract reportedly carries a $1.25 million NHL cap hit for the 2023–24 season.

Tinordi was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, upon the conclusion of his current one-year, $900,000 contract with the Blackhawks.

The Montreal Canadiens originally selected Tinordi in the first round (No. 22 overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. The 6-foot-6 defenseman, who shoots left, made his NHL debut with the Canadiens in 2012–13.

Tinordi has appeared in 153 career games over parts of eight seasons with the Canadiens, Arizona Coyotes, Nashville Predators, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers and Blackhawks, collecting four goals and 21 points. He’s also recorded an assist in 13 career playoff contests with Montreal, Nashville and Boston.

The Blackhawks now have Seth Jones, Nikita Zaitsev, Connor Murphy, and Tinordi under contract for the 2023–24 season, with Wyatt Kaiser, Kevin Korchinski, Isaak Phillips and Alex Vlasic among those in the wings. Caleb Jones and Ian Mitchell are pending restricted free agents.

Chicago still has two games left to play in the 2022–23 regular season. They’ll visit Pittsburgh on Tuesday evening before playing host to the Flyers on Thursday. After that: Connor Bedard might be in their sights.
