Blackhawks trade Alex DeBrincat to Senators for No. 7 and No. 39 picks in 2022 NHL Draft
The Chicago Blackhawks traded 24-year-old All-Star winger Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators for a trio of draft picks Thursday, including the No. 7 overall selection in the 2022 NHL Draft.
In addition to the top-10 pick, the Blackhawks will also receive a second-round pick this year and a third-round selection in 2024.
DeBrincat led the Blackhawks in scoring during the 2021-22 season with 41 goals. The team finished near the bottom of the standings, though, with a 28-42-12 record. Chicago missed the postseason for the fourth time in five years.
With his contract set to expire after the 2022-23 season, Chicago had reportedly been shopping DeBrincat as a way to jump-start its attempt to rebuild the franchise under new general manager Kyle Davidson.
Prior to the trade, the Blackhawks were without a first-round pick this year, trading away their original selection to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a deal to acquire defenseman Seth Jones.
Ottawa and Chicago finished the 2021-22 season 26th and 28th in goals scored, respectively.
