Bruins become fastest team to 100 points in NHL history

The Boston Bruins kept their incredible season going Thursday night, knocking off the Buffalo Sabres 7-1 and increasing the team's win streak to nine games.

The victory also helped the Bruins set an impressive league record as the fastest team to reach 100 points in a season in NHL history.

Boston accomplished the feat in 61 games, one better than the previous record holder, the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens. And it might be a good omen for the Bruins, as the Habs won the Stanley Cup that season, holding onto the legendary prize for four straight seasons until 1980.

"It feels great to be a part of this hockey club and this group of young men that play incredible hockey, with and without the puck, and are really committed to getting better every day. It's just been an incredible run," head coach Jim Montgomery said via NESN

At 48-8-5, the Bruins own by far the best record in the NHL. Boston's 101 points are 15 more than the Carolina Hurricanes (39-12-8), who have the second-most points in the league, with 86.

Before making history Thursday night, the Bruins made two significant moves that will only boost the team's chances of winning the Stanley Cup.

First, the Bruins locked up one of the team's building blocks, inking David Pastrnak to an eight-year, $90 million extension. Soon after, Boston bolstered its top nine, acquiring winger Tyler Bertuzzi from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a top-10 protected 2024 first-round pick and a 2025 fourth-rounder.

The 2022-23 campaign has already been one to remember. However, it may only be a footnote in the franchise's history if the year doesn't end with the Bruins hoisting the Cup.
