Defenseman Hampus Lindholm. Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Just a day after trading for him , the Boston Bruins have signed defenseman Hampus Lindholm to an eight year contract extension with a $6.5 million cap hit.

The Bruins acquired Lindholm Saturday from the Anaheim Ducks in a blockbuster trade deadline deal, bringing him in for a first-round pick, two second-round picks, Urho Vaakanainen and John Moore. It seems they wanted to make that price was well worth it and keep him around longer than this season.

Lindholm currently has five goals and 22 points in 61 games this season, although he’s not as known for his offensive game as he is for being a jack of all trades, master of none. He has a 48.55% CF% and 46.42% xGF% this season at even strength, and while the Ducks don’t have strong underlying numbers as a team, it isn’t the reason Lindholm’s underperforming there, as he is -0.32% and -3.62% relatively to his teammates in those stats, respectively. It will be interesting to see how this changes once he enters the Bruins lineup.

With this extension, the Bruins now have six defenseman locked up until at least 2024. Matt Grzelcyk, Mike Reilly, and Derek Forbort all have two years left on their deals after this season, while Brandon Carlo is with the team until 2027 and Lindholm joins Charlie McAvoy in being locked up until 2030.
