Bruins' Patrice Bergeron day-to-day with head injury

The Boston Bruins lost more than just a game when they fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 on Tuesday night. Bruins forward Brad Marchand ultimately earned a six-game suspension for roughing and high-sticking Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry late in the contest, and center Patrice Bergeron was lost earlier in the third period when he crashed into the boards following an accidental collision with Pittsburgh superstar Sidney Crosby.

Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy confirmed Wednesday that Bergeron has a head injury and wouldn't play in Thursday's matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes, and general manager Don Sweeney offered more information on the 36-year-old who is third on the team with 35 points (12 goals, 23 assists) this season.

"No, he's off again today," Sweeney said ahead of Thursday's contest, per Eric Russo of the club's website. "Everybody saw, he slid into the boards. He has a laceration on the back of his head. We're taking it day by day...no timeframe whatsoever. Just worried about his health, like every other player, in terms of what the process is."

Cassidy said Wednesday the Bruins "have to be careful" because Bergeron's setback is "involving his head." According to Julian Benbow of The Boston Globe, Bergeron suffered at least four concussions from 2007 through 2013.

The 26-15-3 Bruins remain fourth in the Atlantic Division standings and trail the third-place Toronto Maple Leafs by eight points.
