We’re well into the off-season and in the aftermath of the annual entry draft, many outlets are taking stock of prospect pools league-wide. Over at The Athletic, our pal Scott Wheeler has prepared his annual rundown of drafted NHL prospects.

On Tuesday, Wheeler broke down the top 50 drafted skaters in the league, with Calgary Flames forward prospect Matt Coronato appearing on the list.

Coronato was listed as the 39th-best drafted skater on Wheeler’s list.

A first-round selection by the Flames in the 2021 NHL Draft, Coronato was a goal-scoring machine with the United States Hockey League’s Chicago Steel in his draft year. In two seasons since being drafted, he played two years of college hockey at Harvard University and built himself up as a versatile, savvy, all-situations college player. (He played primarily on right wing, but was used as a centre during the first part of his sophomore season due to an injury to teammate John Farinacci that made their depth a bit lean up the middle.)

Coronato signed his entry-level deal with the Flames following Harvard’s ouster from the NCAA’s national tournament in the spring and he made his NHL debut in the final game of the Flames’ season. After returning back to college, Coronato headed to Europe, where he played for the United States at the World Hockey Championships, playing a mixture of centre and right wing.

Four other Flames prospects were named honourable mentions on Wheeler’s list:

  • 2023 first-round pick Samuel Honzek
  • 2023 second-round pick Etienne Morin
  • 2019 first-round pick Jakob Pelletier
  • 2020 first-round pick Connor Zary

Head on over to The Athletic to check out Wheeler’s full breakdown of the top 50 drafted skaters.
