In advance of their departure on a three game eastern road trip, the Calgary Flames have made a roster move. The club announced that they’ve recalled goaltender Dustin Wolf from the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers.

There was no corresponding NHL roster or injury news, as Wolf takes the roster spot vacated on Wednesday when Dryden Hunt was sent to the AHL. As such, it appears the Flames will carry three goaltenders on their road trip – and you have to imagine Wolf gets into one of those games, because otherwise what would the point be of taking him on the trip? It is worth noting, though, that Jacob Markstrom missed Wednesday’s practice for maintenance reasons, per the club, so perhaps this move is precautionary.

Wolf, 22, was the Flames’ seventh-round selection in the 2019 NHL Draft. Since being selected, he was named the top goaltender in the Western Hockey League twice (2019-20 and 2020-21) and the top goaltender in the AHL twice (2021-22 and 2022-23). He was also named the AHL’s most valuable player last season and, if we’re being blunt here, he’s done basically everything a goaltender in their early 20s can do before getting a real shot at the NHL level.

Wolf played one NHL game last season, winning his first (and only) NHL start against San Jose in Game 82. In six starts for the Wranglers this season he’s posted a 5-1-0 record with a 2.34 goals against average and .924 save percentage.

In a corresponding AHL move, the Wranglers have recalled Connor Murphy from the ECHL’s Rapid City Rush. He’ll join Oscar Dansk in the Wranglers’ crease for the time being.

The Flames are back in action on Friday in Toronto. The Wranglers are back in action on Friday in San Diego.
