The Calgary Flames have signed head coach Darryl Sutter to a multi-year contract extension, the club announced Saturday.

Sutter, 64, won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s top coach after the 2021–22 regular season. The two-time Stanley Cup champion led the Flames to a 50–21–11 record last year and a quarterfinal series win over the Dallas Stars.

The Flames signed Sutter to a three-year deal to replace Geoff Ward as head coach midway through the pandemic-shortened 2020–21 season, in which the team missed the playoffs.

The 2021–22 campaign counted as the second year of Sutter’s contract, setting the Viking, AB product to potentially enter 2022–23 as a “lame duck” — a situation the Flames have now avoided.

Before rejoining the Flames in 2021, Sutter had previously served as the head coach of four NHL clubs: the Chicago Blackhawks (1992–1995), San Jose Sharks (1997–2002), Flames (2002–2006), and Los Angeles Kings (2011–2017). Sutter also previously worked as the Flames’ general manager from 2003 to 2010.

Sutter led the Flames to the Stanley Cup Final in 2004 and ultimately won championships with the Kings in 2012 and 2014. He has won 699 NHL games, the 11th-most in league history, and is tied for sixth all-time with 94 playoff wins.

Before becoming a coach, Sutter played eight seasons as a winger with the Blackhawks (five as captain) and scored 279 points in 406 games. In 20 seasons as a head coach with Chicago, San Jose, Calgary, and Los Angeles, Sutter has guided his teams to a 699–503–101–94 record.
