The Calgary Flames signed forward Kevin Rooney to a one-year contract extension worth $1.3 million, according to The Fourth Period’s Kevin Rooney.

The 30-year-old center has one goal and is averaging 10:36 of ice time in 13 games with the Flames this season. Rooney has also appeared in four games with the Flames’ AHL affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers, scoring one goal.

He signed with the Flames ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, splitting the season between the NHL and AHL clubs. Before that, Rooney played six seasons with the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers, recording a career-high eight goals and 14 points in 54 games with the Rangers in 2020-21 season.

Through eight NHL seasons, Roooney has 25 goals and 22 assists for 47 points in 240 career games, averaging 12:16 of ice time.

Before turning professional, the native of Canton, Mass., was a walk-on freshman with the Providence College Friars, playing four seasons from 2012-13 to 2015-16 while majoring in finance. At the end of his fourth season, he signed an amateur tryout with the Albany Devils, New Jersey’s AHL affiliate.

The Flames are 31-26-5 with 67 points, fifth in the Pacific Division. They’re currently six points behind the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Wild Card race. With 20 games to go, Calgary’s attempt to make the post-season will be difficult, but not impossible.

Their next game is Saturday on the road against the Florida Panthers. Puck drop is at 4 p.m. EST / 2 p.m. MST.
