The Calgary Flames are slated to announce Craig Conroy as their new general manager next week, according to reports.

The move comes just over a month after firing former general manager Brad Treliving, who served nine years with the Flames organization. According to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, other candidates included Dave Nonis, Stan Bowman and Marc Bergevin.

The club is expected to make the official announcement on Tuesday, right after the Canadian long weekend.

Conroy joined the Flames staff in 2010 and has been the club’s assistant general manager for nine years. It should be no shock to see Conroy get the well-deserved promotion. Conroy’s first task will be finding a new head coach for the Flames after the team parted ways with Darryl Sutter earlier this offseason.

The Potsdam, New York, product spent 16 seasons in the National Hockey League as a player. He suited up in 1,009 regular season games for the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues and the Flames. He tallied 182 goals and 360 assists for 542 points throughout his career and is a two-time Selke Trophy Finalist earning the honors in 1997-98 and 2001-02. Conroy tallied 97 goals, 211 assists in 507 games for the Flames. In 2003-04 he helped lead the Flames to the Stanley Cup final, registering 17 points in 26 games as the Flames fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

During a recent Sportsnet 960 radio interview, Flames legend Jarome Iginla backed Conroy for the general manager position saying, “I believe we have a great guy there in Conroy… I’m excited. I really hope he gets it. I think he’ll do a great job. He loves Calgary. He hasn’t left. He always comes back.”
