The Calgary Wranglers have retained their captain for the 2023-24 season.

The club announced on Tuesday morning that veteran forward Brett Sutter has signed a one-year American Hockey League contract to remain with the franchise for another season.

Sutter, 36, is the eldest son of long-time NHL head coach Darryl Sutter, who most recently coached the Flames before his firing after the 2022-23 season.

Originally a sixth-round selection by the Flames back in 2005, Brett has had a heck of a pro career. He had brief NHL stints with the Flames, Hurricanes and Wild, accumulating 60 big-league games. But he’s arguably one of the most prominent AHL players of his era, playing 1,006 games split between Quad City, Abbotsford, Charlotte, Iowa, Ontario and the Wranglers – and serving as captain in Charlotte, Ontario and Calgary.

Sutter found a really nice niche in 2022-23 with the Wranglers, primarily playing down the stretch alongside veterans Kevin Rooney and Clark Bishop on a really effective checking line. In 70 games, Sutter had 14 goals and 29 points. He may not be somebody who will push for NHL duty, but Sutter’s a really reliable, versatile and useful veteran player that can help the Flames’ youngsters take that next step towards the NHL.

Sutter is the seventh announced AHL signing for the Wranglers for the upcoming season, alongside Mitch McLain, Mark Duarte, Alex Gallant, Jarrod Gourley, Matt Radomsky and Connor Murphy.
