Canadiens expect Cole Caufield to turn pro after college season

The Montreal Canadiens could have one of their top prospects on board after the 2020-21 college hockey season comes to an end.

Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said Monday that he expects Cole Caufield to turn pro once his college season at the University of Wisconsin is over.

"He has progressed a lot in the last year, but again it's too early to tell you exactly what the plans are but expect him to turn pro after this year," Bergevin told reporters Monday. "Now where can he play once his season is over? That remains to be seen."

Bergevin would not reveal when Caufield could potentially join the team. He'll be subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine when he enters Canada and likely won't be available until at least April.

Montreal drafted Caufield 15th overall in 2019. He has 33 points (17 goals, 16 assists) in 22 games for Wisconsin this season and also helped Team USA win gold at this year's World Junior Championships, where he notched five points (two goals, three assists) in seven games.

Bergevin also said that Northeastern University defenseman Jordan Harris could turn pro at the end of the Hockey East season. Montreal selected him in the third round of the 2018 draft.
