The Montreal Canadiens announced that goaltender Jake Allen will be out for the remainder of the season with a groin injury.

Allen sustained the injury in the first period of Saturday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and left the game after stopping 14-of-15 shots in 13:33 of ice time. The Habs announced that they expect he will recover in time for the start of training camp next season.

Allen became the Canadiens starter this season after the team announced that Carey Price would be on a leave of absence. Allen played in 35 games this season, and like the rest of the team, he struggled, with a 9-20-4 record and a .905 save percentage.

Allen is in the first year of a two-year contract with a $2.875 million cap hit, an extension that he signed with Montreal after they acquired him in the 2020 offseason for a third- and seventh-round draft pick.

The Canadiens have called up Cayden Primeau to replace him, and he’ll likely split starts with Samuel Montembeault for the team’s nine remaining games. Price may potentially get some games in as the season winds down, as he hasn’t been shut down for the season at this point.
