On the day the Montreal Canadiens introduced interim coach Marty St. Louis to the media, rumors were swirling about another potential hire for the franchise.

Frank Seravalli and Mike McKenna addressed that topic on the Thursday afternoon edition of the Daily Faceoff Show:

McKenna: “On Wednesday, there was a little bit of talk around the league about Vinny Lecavalier possibly joining the Montreal Canadiens. He might be a fit, you think about the old Lightning connection with Marty St. Louis. I played with them in Tampa Bay, I’m just waiting for the call to be the goaltending coach.

“Do you think there’s a chance Lecavalier could join his former teammate and former agent in Montreal?”

Seravalli: “Yeah, I think there’s certainly a possibility. There was a report out of Quebec on Wednesday that Vinny Lecavalier would be announced as soon as today as the Canadiens’ assistant to the general manager, who, as you mentioned, is his former agent.

“I’m told that is a bit premature, but indeed been a conversation between the Canadiens and Lecavalier in terms of a potential role. What does that fit look like? What would the duties be? What would the time responsibilities be for Lecavalier, who I believe is living in Florida?

“He is a possibility as a special assistant to the general manager, but I’m told the Canadiens are also speaking to another former NHL player at the moment for a very similar role to have Lecavalier and this other former player both step into the organization at the same time in an attempt to reset the culture there in Montreal in what’s been a disastrous season.

“It’s been tough for some of these players to get through. You listen to these guys speak and voice their opinion after Dominique Ducharme has been fired. Maybe Marty St. Louis as a coaching change, Vinny Lecavalier and this other former player can help turn this thing around, in addition to the work Kent Hughes is doing as general manager alongside president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton.”
