Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes has been named the National Hockey League Players’ Association player of the week for October 27 to November 2, the NHLPA announced Friday.

Hughes, 24, racked up a league-leading seven assists and 10 points over the last week, including five points in the Canucks’ staggering 10–1 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday.

The newly-minted Canucks captain also collected a pair of goals, including the game-winner, against the St. Louis Blues on October 27.

Hughes is tied with J.T. Miller for second on the Canucks with 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) through 10 games this season. Under his leadership, the Canucks have put together a strong 7–2–1 record to the 2023–24 season.

The Canucks named Hughes captain on September 11, filling the vacancy that opened when they traded Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders midway through the 2022–23 season.

Under previous general manager Jim Benning, the Canucks originally selected Hughes with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. The former University of Michigan defenseman made his NHL debut with the Canucks at the end of the 2018–19 season.

After emerging as a full-time NHLer with the Canucks the following year, Hughes was named a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie. In 2021, he signed a six-year deal with the Canucks worth $7.85 million per season.

Through 293 career NHL games over parts of six seasons with the Canucks, Hughes has collected 30 goals and 257 points. He added two goals and 16 points in 17 playoff contests with the Canucks during the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoff bubble.

Hughes is the eldest of three brothers, all of whom play in the NHL. The New Jersey Devils drafted Jack (No. 1 in 2019) and Luke Hughes (No. 4 in 2021) in the years after Quinn made his NHL debut.

The Canucks have made the playoffs once since 2015. The elder Hughes will remain at the forefront as they attempt to change that this season.
