Canucks sign coach Travis Green to multiyear extension

The Vancouver Canucks endured a difficult and disappointing season that included the NHL's worst COVID-19 outbreak of the campaign that sidelined Vancouver for several weeks and one that ended with the Canucks understandably sitting dead last in the North standings.

Despite all of that, Vancouver general manager Jim Benning announced Friday that coach Travis Green has agreed to a multiyear contract to remain with the club.

"We are excited to have Travis Green continue to lead the Canucks as head coach and move forward from a challenging year to focus on future seasons," Benning said for the prepared statement, per the league's website. "Our plan has always been to draft and develop a young core and surround them with supporting players who can help us win. We have some of the best young players in the NHL and I believe Travis is the right coach to help us achieve team success and a return to the playoffs."

According to TSN, Green guided the Canucks to the second round of the playoffs last summer and then worked the 2020-21 season on an expiring contract.

"Coaching the Vancouver Canucks has been a privilege and I am excited at the opportunity to continue behind the bench with this team," Green said. "I believe this young team and organization is on the rise. They have shown character, a strong will to win and we expect big things in the years ahead."

Green holds a record of 125-132-32 since taking the Vancouver job in April 2017 and is fifth on the franchise's all-time list for games coached and wins.
