The Vancouver Canucks have traded centre Jack Studnicka to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenceman Nick Cicek and a sixth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, the club announced Friday afternoon.

Studnicka, 24, has appeared in five games with Vancouver this season, collecting one point (a goal). He has also skated in nine games with the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks, racking up one goal and seven points.

“We would like to thank Jack for his time with the Vancouver Canucks,” Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said in a statement on Friday. “We wish him the best moving forward and are pleased to add another depth defenceman for Abbotsford to work with and develop.”

The Canucks originally acquired Studnicka from the Boston Bruins in October 2022, sending goaltender Michael DiPietro and defence prospect Jonathan Myrenberg the other way in the deal.

Cicek, 23, is a 6’3″ left-handed defenceman who has dressed for 18 AHL games with the San Jose Barracuda this season, managing three points (one goal, two assists).

With the addition of the Sharks’ own 2024 sixth-round draft selection, the Canucks now possess seven picks in next year’s draft: their own 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th, as well as New Jersey’s 4th and San Jose’s 6th.

The Bruins originally selected Studnicka in the second round (No. 53 overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft. The Windsor, Ontario product made his NHL debut with the Bruins in 2019–20 and spent parts of four seasons with the team before being sent to the Canucks. In 47 games with Vancouver in 2022–23, Studnicka managed four goals and eight points.

Cicek signed with the Sharks as an undrafted free agent in 2022 upon the conclusion of his AHL rookie season with the Barracuda. The Winnipeg, Manitoba product skated in his first 16 NHL games with the Sharks in 2022–23, collecting four assists.

The Canucks will return to action on Saturday when they take on the Minnesota Wild at 11:00 a.m. PT.
