The Washington Capitals have begun their West Coast swing on the wrong foot.

A third-period goal by Luke Kunin propelled the San Jose Sharks ahead of the Capitals, ultimately resulting in the Capitals’ 2-1 loss.

Kunin’s goal, coming near the 13-minute mark, broke nearly 20 minutes of a tied score.

Sharks forward Fabian Zetterlund put his team on the board first after a goal near the halfway point of the first period, allowing the Sharks to enter the first intermission in control.

It took a while, but the Capitals made it on the board after an Evgeny Kuznetsov score toward the end of the second period, knotting the score.

All the while, neither team gained a substantial edge. While the Capitals tallied more shots by night’s end, their three power play chances bore no fruit. On the other hand, the Sharks appeared to make the most of their limited chances.

After pulling goalie Darcy Kuemper in the game’s final minutes, the Capitals’ efforts again failed to result in a score — securing the Sharks’ win.
