The Washington Capitals have signed forward Marcus Johansson to a one-year contract, the club announced Wednesday.

The deal carries a cap hit of $1.1 million. Johansson, 31, scored nine goals and 29 points in 69 games split between the Seattle Kraken and Washington in 2021-22.

The Capitals traded forward Daniel Sprong and two draft picks to the Kraken to acquire Johansson at the 2022 trade deadline.

Johansson was drafted by the Capitals in the first round (No. 24 overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft and spent his first seven NHL seasons in D.C. before being traded to the New Jersey Devils in 2017.

During his initial tenure in Washington, Johansson posted two 20-goal seasons and exceeded the 40-point plateau five times. He struggled to stay healthy in New Jersey, however, and was traded to the Boston Bruins at the 2019 trade deadline.

Johansson helped the Bruins reach the 2019 Stanley Cup Final before signing with the Buffalo Sabres as a free agent. He subsequently spent time with the Minnesota Wild and Seattle before rejoining the Capitals near the end of the 2021–22 season.

In 753 career NHL games with Washington, New Jersey, Boston, Buffalo, Minnesota and Seattle, Johansson has amassed 144 goals and 407 points. He’s added 14 goals and 43 points in 103 career playoff games with Washington, New Jersey, Boston and Minnesota.
