The Washington Capitals will be celebrating their 50th anniversary at the beginning of the 2024-2025 season and have unveiled a logo celebrating the milestone. This logo emulates the team’s original and iconic style of logo by incorporating elements such as a stick and puck, all-lowercase fonts, and a reverse-italic design. The new logo also draws on the 1974 red and blue color scheme and features alternating red and blue stars–five of them– as a nod to the inaugural Capitals’ jersey and a way to honor five decades of hockey in the District. The 50th anniversary logos will be seen in three iterations, as well as word marks, with each showcasing those same elements.
The team will sport a 50th-anniversary patch on their regular jerseys to commemorate the anniversary. With no third jerseys coming in the 2024-2025 season under the NHL’s new contract with Fanatics, it is unlikely the team will be wearing the logo or original colors in any capacity beyond the patch. It’s disappointing that the Capitals will likely not pay homage to the original uniforms’ classic stars and colors, the sleek look of the 90’s blue and gold, or the fan-favorite screaming eagle. However, the celebratory logo is a nice blend of modern and classic and is, in my opinion, the best of the anniversary logos. The patch also compliments the iconic red home jerseys and matches the Weagle patches that have become a staple on the latest iteration of the uniforms. The logo will also be seen at center ice in Capital One Arena throughout the season.

The team has adopted the mantra “A Legacy in ALL CAPS” for the season, showcasing the team’s commitment to not taking the Capitals’ historic legacy lightly and continuing to make an impact in their community as their legacy lives on. The team will be hosting a variety of events throughout the season to honor and celebrate the rich history of the Washington Capitals, most notably the in-arena “Eras Nights”. Each Eras Night will celebrate a specific period of Capitals history from 1974 to today, giving fans a nostalgic journey through the team’s evolution.
