Jim Montgomery was born on June 30, 1969, in Montreal, Quebec. Montgomery was a forward who played four seasons at the University of Maine-Orono from 1989-1993. In that time, Montgomery appeared in 170 games and scored 103 goals with 178 assists. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound center played 122 career NHL games with five teams and registered nine goals and 25 assists. Montgomery finished his career in the UHL with the Missouri River Otters in 2004-05.
Montgomery began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at the University of Notre Dame during the 2005-2006 season, then became an assistant coach for four seasons at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. During a three-season stint as general manager and head coach with the Dubuque Fighting Saints from 2010-13, Montgomery won two championships and was named General Manager of the Year twice in the USHL. Montgomery was hired as head coach of the University of Denver men’s hockey team and spent five seasons and won the NCAA Division 1 Championship in 2016-17 when he was also NCAA Coach of the Year.
Montgomery was named head coach of the Dallas Stars in the NHL for the 2018-19 season and spent a little over a season there before getting terminated on October 12, 2019. The St. Louis Blues hired Montgomery as an assistant for two seasons before the former Black Bears star was hired by the Boston Bruins to be head coach. Montgomery led Boston to the best regular season record in NHL history before losing in a first-round upset to the Florida Panthers. In his second season with the Bruins, Montgomery spearheaded Boston to a second-place finish in the Atlantic Division and a second-round loss to Florida. Jim Montgomery has one year left on his contract heading into the 2024-25 season.
