As per a report by Kevin Weekes, it appears the Colorado Avalanche have keyed in on and landed their goaltender of need. They’ve acquired Devan Dubnyk from the San Jose Sharks ahead of Monday’s NHL Trade Deadline. Reports are Colorado is sending defenseman Greg Pateryn and a 2021 5th round pick.

The Avs badly needed a goaltender. This was really the final big piece to cement them as Stanley Cup contenders since they were already the hottest team in the NHL and favorites by many to win it all. Goaltending was the one question mark for the franchise and Dubnyk will certainly address that need for them.

The Sharks has also confirmed the move on their social media account. “I can’t thank Dubnyk enough for what he brought in his short time.” – said Sharks’ head coach Bob Boughner.

Jonathan Willis writes, “Dubnyk’s had a rough a year and a half, but the Avalanche aren’t paying much to get him. San Jose probably did well to get anything given how many backup options there are out there.” The Sharks were certainly not going to bring him back.

Sharks GM Doug Wilson released the following statement on the move:

Devan brought the element of consummate professionalism and class to our dressing room, in what has been an extremely unique and challenging season. He fit seamlessly within our group and helped mentor many of our younger players. We thank him for his contributions to our club on and off the ice this season and wish him the best in Colorado.

Dubnyk has a 3.18 goals against average with a .898 save percentage over 17 games with the Sharks this season.
