As Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported first, Colorado Avalanche veteran Andrew Cogliano is out indefinitely following a fractured neck he suffered during Game 6 Friday against the Seattle Kraken.
The incident occurred around the 2:00 minute mark of the second period when Kraken forward Jordan Eberle hit Cogliano from behind into the boards. Cogliano was down in serious discomfort; he was able to leave the ice on his own with assistance from the Avalanche medical staff. Eberle was assessed a two-minute minor for boarding. Cogliano logged two hits and one takeaway in 11:01 of ice time as the Avalanche won 4-1, forcing Game 7.
The 35-year-old has registered zero points in the four playoff games played so far. However, he is coming off a 10-goal, 19-point season, the highest point total he has notched since 2017-18. In 2019-20 Cogliano was a part of the Dallas Stars’ run to the Stanley Cup, which, unfortunately, they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Last season though, Cogliano got his revenge; he tallied three goals and three assists in 16 games to help the Avs capture the Stanley Cup over the Lightning, who were back-to-back champs.
The Toronto, Ontario, product was initially drafted in the first round, 25th overall of the 2005 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers. After a successful two-year stint with the Univeristy of Michigan in the NCAA, he made his NHL debut in 2007-08 and registered 45 points in 82 games as a rookie. The veteran has appeared in 1,219 regular season games with the Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks and the Avalanche, totalling 184 goals and 261 assists for 445 points.
