Coyotes ink son of franchise legend to entry-level deal

Six years after franchise legend Shane Doan hung up his skates for good, another Doan may soon don an Arizona Coyotes jersey.

On Thursday, the Coyotes inked Doan's son, Josh Doan, to an entry-level deal, beginning with the 2023-24 NHL season.

Doan will report to the Coyotes' AHL affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners, where he'll make his professional debut Friday against the Calgary Wranglers.

Undrafted in 2019, Doan played two seasons with the Chicago Steel of the USHL before the Coyotes selected him in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft.

Doan spent the last two seasons playing for Arizona State at Mullett Arena, which presently serves as the temporary home of the Coyotes. The 21-year-old led the Sun Devils in goals (16) this past season and finished second in points (38), behind only Detroit Red Wings prospect Robert Mastrosimone (42).

While we'll have to wait and see whether or not he can rival what his father accomplished over 20 seasons with the franchise, Doan has the skill to be a future top-six forward. Doan has a rocket shot from the right side, and much like his father, he doesn't shy away from the rough stuff.

If Doan ultimately joins the Coyotes next season, he'll undoubtedly have some massive skates to fill. Doan's father, whose No. 19 is retired by the team, finished his career as the franchise leader in games played (1,540), goals (402), assists (570) and points (972).
