Today it was announced that the New Jersey Devils have selected forward Curtis Lazar as their 2023-2024 season nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy. Lazar is a one-time previous nominee in 2020, as a member of the Buffalo Sabres. The Masterton Trophy is the NHL’s award for the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the sport. Each team submits a nominee, and the award is voted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
Lazar was traded to the Devils from the Vancouver Canucks in March of 2023. He faced numerous setbacks as he made his start with the Jersey squad. His wife, Reanne, was in labor with the couple’s second child at the time. She remained in Vancouver with their two year old son. The Canadian national also dealt with immigration issues that caused a delay in his arrival to his new team. This also prevented his wife and young children from being able to join him in the States for months. Facing the reality of being separated from his family and starting over with a new team, he suffered a partial MCL tear in a late-season game. Lazar made an effort to be diligent and patient with his rehab and was able to recover in time to be a part of the Devils 2023 playoff run.
This season, Lazar has again shown his perseverance and unwavering commitment to playing his game despite the circumstances. The Devils have dealt with a tough season full of injuries, coaching changes, goaltending inconsistencies, and unmet expectations. Lazar has made his presence known on the ice as he consistently blocks shots, having 63 on the season so far. He’s been an important attribute to help the Devils young defense in protecting the net. He’s currently one goal shy of his career best and has 25 points on the season.
Off the ice, Lazar is known for his positive personality and infectious love for the game. In a season that’s been draining on players and staff, Lazar has embodied a positive outlook and a dedication to his craft. He’s stood up for his teammates on the ice and shown that he’s passionate about the New Jersey Devils organization.
The winner of the Masterton Trophy will be announced in June at the NHL awards ceremony.
