The Washington Capitals celebrated the Fourth of July as Martin Fehervary re-signs a new deal. The two sides agreed on terms to a new contract together. The Capitals General Manager Brian MacLellan made the announcement earlier that brought both sides on board. Fehérváry has been a consistent performer thus far through his two seasons with the Capitals. He was more than deserving of the deal.

Martin Fehervary Re-Signs with the Washington Capitals

The Slovakian native, Fehérváry, was a 46th overall pick by the Capitals organization back in 2018. He became a regular for the Capitals in 2021-22 and has appeared in 152 career NHL games to this point. In addition, he scored eight goals, and nine assists for 17 points through 79 games in 2021-22. This season he had six goals and 10 assists for 16 points in fewer games, only 67. Furthermore, he has had some strong analytic results over those seasons. His defensive points share (DPS) was 4.2 and 2.3, over the last two seasons, respectively.

What Does This Mean for the Washington Capitals

All-in-all this is a solid deal for both sides. Washington gets good value, on a strong depth defender. Moreover, for Martin Fehèrváry himself, his play has warranted him such a contract to be willing to re-sign. It will further give him the opportunity to mature into a steady NHL. Washington wants to find that re-tool middle ground so that Alexander Ovechkin gets to play with a contender. Playing for a contender while chasing the historic mark of 894 of number 99 Wayne Gretzky. Currently, Ovi sits at 822. The Capitals have made some moves in the right direction. Rasmus Sandin and Darcy Kuemper are examples of that plan. Shoring up a defenceman like Fehérváry can be an underrated move, but no less important. They recently extended Trevor van Riemsdyk as well. The Eastern Conference will be difficult to get out of for 2023-24 but simply being competitive is really what the organizational goal is now.
