Denna Laing benefit auction sweaters receiving high bids

For a glimpse into the support that teams and fans are giving to Denna Laing, look no further than NHL.com's "Auctions" section.

Tuesday evening, the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens wore outdoor game-themed jerseys in honor of the NWHL forward and said jerseys were autographed and put up for auction benefiting Laing with "100% of auction proceeds" going to her recovery and rehab. On Wednesday, the three-page effort boasted multiple bids on all sweaters from both teams — 28 in total — with offers ranging from the $400 range to upward of $3,500.

It's just one of a couple ways that Laing and her family have been shown support after the Boston Pride forward suffered a severe spinal injury in the Outdoor Women's Classic at Gillette Stadium, which was played on New Year's Eve as part of the Winter Classic festivities between the Bruins and Habs. The Bruins announced last week a pledge to donate $200,000 to help.

The NHL came under quite a bit of fire following the women's outdoor game, stemming primarily from the lack of broadcasting coverage of the game and between the Pride and Les Canadiennes of Montreal. Reports that the ice conditions were poor and that they could have resulted in Laing's injury, in addition to a New York Post article saying Laing and her family were expected to sue the league, only made matter worse. The NHL is working in conjunction with the National Hockey League's Players Association and the Bruins and Canadiens to put the jersey auction on.

The highest-bid sweater in the Denna Laing Benefit Auction, you might ask? The jersey worn by Patrice Bergeron, who also auctioned off a suite at TD Gardens in Laing's name, has a current bid of $5,100.
