In addition to their pair of Swedes, the Detroit Red Wings will send a Finnish representative to compete at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Red Wings 2020 third-round draft pick Eemil Viro has been selected to join Team Finland at the 2022 World Juniors. The Red Wings selected the left-handed defenseman with the 70th-overall pick at the 2020 draft.

Viro, 19, has one goal and three points in 25 games with TPS Turku of the Finnish Liiga this season. He previously appeared in seven games with Team Finland as an 18-year-old at the 2021 World Juniors, tallying two assists.

Viro is the lone Red Wing prospect eligible to play for Team Finland at the 2022 tournament. He’ll compete against fellow Red Wings draft picks Simon Edvinsson and Theodor Niederbach in Finland’s games against Team Sweden.

The 2022 World Juniors will take place in the Alberta cities of Edmonton and Red Deer, with the competition running between Dec. 26, 2021 and Jan. 5, 2022.
