Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Jeff Petry (26) Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Detroit Red Wings’ head coach Derek Lalonde announced on Tuesday that defenseman Jeff Petry is day-to-day with an injury.

It’s unclear what the injury is or what caused it at the moment, but it appears to not be a severe one. The announcement comes at an interesting time, as Petry was a healthy scratch in Sunday’s game against the Calgary Flames. Considering that he played the entirety of his previous game on Saturday against the Ottawa Senators, this is likely an injury that occurred off the ice or during practice, although it could very well be the reason that he was scratched on Sunday.

Petry, 35, has had a solid start to the season with two assists in four games with the Red Wings, which is on par for his usual production of around 0.5 points per game in the past six seasons. He’s been good defensively so far with a 5v5 expected goals against per 60 of 2.36, but his more middling expected goals four per 60 of 2.41 rounds out his overall expected goal share to just 50.52%.

With Petry having not played in the Red Wings last game anyways, Detroit will stick with the same lineup on defense that they had on Sunday in the wake of Petry’s injury. So far Olli Maatta and Justin Holl have been the defensemen on the roster rotated out for Petry, although the Wings have also opted to go with seven defensemen in the lineup a couple times already. Maatta has one assist in five games, and Holl has three assists in five games.

Petry was a former second-round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in the 2006 NHL draft, and has spent parts of 14 seasons with the Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Red Wings. He’s currently in the third year of a four-year contract with a $6.25 million cap hit, one he signed with the Canadiens in the 2020 offseason, although only $2,343,750 of that cap hit is on the Red Wings’ cap sheet.
