Last night the Detroit Red Wings 2023-24 season came to an end despite the team winning three straight games and finishing tied with the Washington Capitals, however, the Capitals with their 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers claimed the final spot in the Eastern Conference for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Red Wings on back-to-back nights against the Canadiens pulled off improbable comebacks, on Monday they scored two goals in the third period to tie the game and force overtime, Lucas Raymond scored with 1:17 left to force overtime then he scored the game-winner in overtime to keep the season alive. Last night with the Red Wings down by one got a goal from David Perron with five seconds left to once again force overtime, by the time the overtime period started the Capitals had scored to make it 2-1. The Red Wings ended up going to a shootout and would win when Patrick Kane beat Cayden Primeau but by then the Capitals had secured the win and the players knew it. It was a tough end to the season. Now with the season concluding the Red Wings made some moves as they reassigned Forward Zach Aston-Reese and Defenseman Simon Edvinsson to Grand Rapids of the AHL as well as signed Defenseman Shai Buium to a three-year entry-level contract from the University of Denver who are coming off a National Championship. All three will join the Grand Rapids Griffins in their Calder Cup run which starts next week with their regular season ending on Sunday, the Griffins will take on Rockford IceHogs the affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Red Wings Moves By The Numbers
Forward – Zach Aston-Reese
Aston-Reese in his first season with the Red Wings has spent time between the NHL and the AHL. With Detroit, he played in three games and didn’t record a point. With Grand Rapids, he played in 59 games, and he had 29 points on 14 goals and 15 assists, he was a plus-four. He was sixth on the Griffins in points and fifth on the team in goals.
Defenseman – Simon Edvinsson
Edvinsson is one of the Red Wings top prospects and fans are excited to see him in the Winged Wheel jersey for years to come. With Detroit he played in 16 games and recorded two points on a goal and an assist; the goal was scored on Saturday against the Maple Leafs. With Grand Rapids, he played in 52 games, and he had 29 points on eight goals and 21 shots, he was a plus-five. Edvinsson is eighth on the team in points, and fifth in assists.
Defenseman – Shai Buium
Buium is coming off helping the Denver Pioneers claim their second Championship in the last three years. He was drafted by Detroit with the 36th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. In three seasons at Denver, he played in 120 games and recorded 75 points on 14 goals and 61 assists; he finished his college career as a plus 61. This season in 43 games he had 36 points on seven goals and 29 assists; he finished fifth on the Pioneers in points, and fourth in assists.
