The Detroit Red Wings announced that goaltender Ville Husso will not be returning to Tuesday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers due to a lower-body injury.

Husso, 29, left the game mid-way through the first period after Leon Draisaitl’s 1-0 goal caused the Helsinki, Finland product to make an awkward stretch in an to attempt to save the shot, and he did not return to the game. There’s no further information on the severity of the injury or how long Husso will be out of the lineup.

Husso had stopped six of seven shots for an .857% save percentage in 8:48 of ice time before leaving the game, with Alex Lyon taking over the crease in his place.

Husso’s struggles since joining the Red Wings have continued this season, even more so with his health, as he has played just 18 games with a 9-5-2 record and an .893% save%. However, his struggles aren’t nearly as bad under the hood, as he has 2.64 goals saved above expected.

Despite his struggles, Husso has actually been one of the best goalies in the league at preventing high-danger chances. Since 2021-22, his 0.842% high-danger save% is 7th amongst goalies with at least 5,000 minutes of ice time.

Husso was originally a fourth-round pick of the St. Louis Blues in the 2014 NHL Draft, making his NHL debut in 2021 and playing two seasons in St. Louis before he was dealt to the Red Wings for a third-round draft pick in the 2022 offseason.

Husso is currently in the second year of an three-year contract with a $4.75 million cap hit, one he signed with the Wings in 2022 after they acquired him.

The Red Wings currently sits in fifth in the Atlantic Division with an 27-18-6 record, which is good enough for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.
