Devils HC Lindy Ruff in COVID-19 protocol, out vs. Oilers

The 11-15-5 New Jersey Devils encountered one final setback of 2021 ahead of Friday's home game against the 18-12-0 Edmonton Oilers.

New Jersey confirmed Friday that head coach Lindy Ruff had been placed in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol and, thus, will not be available for Friday's matchup. Assistant Alain Nasreddine served as Devils interim coach for the final day of the year.

The Associated Press (h/t ESPN) notes Ruff tested positive for the coronavirus. Nasreddine later told reporters Ruff planned to watch Friday's contest while at the Prudential Center.

Nasreddine did not say how long Ruff may be out of action heading into January.

Despite altered protocols embraced by leagues as a result of the highly contagious Omicron variant, COVID-19 surges continue to impact sports competitions throughout North America and around the world. Seven NBA coaches began Friday morning in that league's health and safety protocols related to the virus, and it was reported Thursday that roughly 36% of NBA referees were in the protocols at the time that story went public.
