The New Jersey Devils continued their roster trim on Wednesday. New Jersey placed Defenseman Cal Foote on waivers with the intent to send the former first-round pick to the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League.

Foote (24) signed a one-year, two-way contract with New Jersey back in August worth $800,000 at the NHL level and $350,000 at the American Hockey League level, $450,000 guaranteed, for 2023-24. The Englewood, Colorado native took part in two preseason contests, scoring no points and chipping in two shots.

Foote skated in 50 NHL games last season between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Nashville Predators. He scored two goals and five assists for seven points in all of 2022-23.

The former first-round pick by the Lightning in 2017 was drafted as a defensive defenseman. Therefore, the point totals last season, and lack of points in the preseason aren’t alarming.

31 NHL teams now have the opportunity to claim Foote. However, if a team doesn’t scoop him up for his services, he’s likely to report to the Comets as their training camp is underway. Foote’s brother, Nolan, remains with the varsity squad as he fights for a roster spot with two preseason games to go.

Additionally, goaltender Erik Kallgren, placed on waivers on Tuesday, cleared on Wednesday and is headed to Utica for training camp.
