Shutdown defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler will be sticking around in New Jersey long-term.

The Devils announced on Tuesday that they have agreed to a five-year contract extension with Siegenthaler worth $3.4 million annually.

Siegenthaler is going into the second season of a two-year contract and he was set to become a restricted free agent next summer. The two-year deal that Siegenthaler inked last summer is worth $1.125 million, so this extension features a significant raise for the defender.

Siegenthaler was selected in the second round of the 2015 NHL draft by the Washington Capitals. He made his NHL debut for the Capitals in 2018-19 and played in 97 games with the team over parts of three seasons.

In April of 2021, Siegenthaler was traded to the Devils in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. He put together a breakout season on New Jersey’s blueline, logging a career-high 20:34 per night over the course of 70 games.

Born in Zurich, Siegenthaler represented Switzerland in international competition in the 2015, 2016, and 2017 World Junior Championships. In 2017, he played from Switzerland alongside Devils’ captain, Nico Hischier, and the two finished first and second on the team in scoring.
